Overview
Vaccination is reviewed as part of adolescent, preconception, antenatal and well-woman visits, so that the right vaccine is offered at the right time.
Vaccines offered
- HPV vaccine — ideally at 9–14 years (two doses); catch-up up to 26, and up to 45 after discussion
- Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) — in every pregnancy, usually between 27 and 36 weeks
- Influenza vaccine — every year, and at any stage of pregnancy
- MMR (rubella) — before pregnancy if not immune; not given during pregnancy
- Hepatitis B — before pregnancy or as advised
- Varicella (chickenpox) — before pregnancy if never infected or vaccinated
- Tetanus toxoid as per national schedule
Vaccination in pregnancy — what is safe
- Inactivated vaccines such as Tdap and influenza are safe and recommended
- Live vaccines (MMR, varicella) are avoided in pregnancy and given afterwards if needed
- COVID-19 vaccination is recommended in pregnancy as per current national guidance

Yes. It has been used worldwide for over 15 years with an excellent safety record and has dramatically reduced cervical pre-cancer where uptake is high.
I am already sexually active — is HPV vaccination still worthwhile?
It can still protect against HPV types you have not yet encountered. Discuss the benefit for your age and situation.
Which vaccines should I have before planning pregnancy?
Rubella (MMR), varicella if not immune, and hepatitis B if not previously vaccinated — ideally at least one month before conceiving.
