Pap Smear & Cervical Cancer Screening in Indirapuram

Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented almost entirely — through HPV vaccination and regular screening that finds pre-cancerous changes years before cancer develops. A Pap smear takes a couple of minutes. Dr. Bhavya Rathore provides cervical screening, HPV testing and follow-up of abnormal results in Indirapuram.

Overview

Screening detects changes in cervical cells caused by persistent HPV infection. A Pap smear examines the cells; an HPV test detects the high-risk virus types. Most abnormal results are minor and resolve on their own; a small number need closer examination with colposcopy and, if needed, a simple treatment to remove the abnormal area. Cervical cancer is still one of the most common cancers among Indian women, largely because screening rates are low.

Who should be screened and how often

  • All women from 21–25 years who have ever been sexually active
  • Pap smear every three years, or HPV test (with or without Pap) every five years from age 30
  • More frequent screening after an abnormal result or with reduced immunity
  • Screening continues until about 65 with a history of normal results
  • Vaccinated women still need screening

Symptoms that need evaluation regardless of screening

  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Bleeding between periods or after menopause
  • Persistent unusual discharge
  • Pelvic pain

What happens at a screening visit

  • A brief examination with a speculum; a small brush collects cells from the cervix
  • Mildly uncomfortable for a few seconds; no anaesthesia needed
  • Best done mid-cycle, not during a period
  • Results in about a week; you are contacted with the result and plan

If the result is abnormal

  • Repeat test or HPV test for minor changes
  • Colposcopy — a magnified examination of the cervix — for higher-grade changes
  • Biopsy of any abnormal area
  • LEEP/LLETZ or other simple procedures to remove pre-cancerous tissue when required
  • Structured follow-up until results return to normal

Frequently asked questions

Does an abnormal Pap smear mean cancer?

Almost never. Most abnormalities are minor changes that resolve on their own or pre-cancerous changes that are easily treated.

Can I have a Pap smear during pregnancy?

Yes, it is safe and often done at the first antenatal visit if screening is due.

Is HPV vaccination useful after 26?

The vaccine is most effective before exposure to HPV, but it can still offer protection up to age 45. Discuss your situation with Dr. Rathore.
